New case of “West Nile” makes 21 this year, EUA
The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) says this case is out of Marion County. This brings the 2016 state total to 21.The virus has been confirmed in the following counties this year: Calhoun, Chickasaw, Copiah (2), Hinds (6), Grenada, Lamar (2), Lee, Leflore, Lincoln, Lowndes, Marion (2), Perry and Rankin.There has been one death as a result of the virus out of Hinds County.Last year, 38 cases were confirmed with one death.
The MSDH suggests the following precautions to protect yourself and your environment from mosquito-borne illnesses:
• Use a mosquito repellent with an EPA-registered ingredient such as DEET while you are outdoors.
• Remove all sources of standing water around your home and yard to prevent mosquito breeding.
• Wear loose, light-colored, long clothing to cover the arms and legs when outdoors.
• Avoid areas where mosquitoes are prevalent.
