Cases of polio-like Illness Increasing in US, EUA

According to a recent report, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently announced about the confirmed cases of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM - a neurologic syndrome that can be caused by a variety of pathogens) in the country and claimed that the cases have increased in 2016 as compared to the number of cases documented in 2015. However, the cause behind this rise is uncertain.

The CDC began actively investigating AFM in August 2014. At that time, the leading national public health institute noticed an elevation in the cases of people across the United States with AFM, for which no cause could be established. The federal health officials have stated that 50 people in 24 states across the U.S. were confirmed to AFM from Jan. 1 to Aug. 31, 2016 as compared to 21 people in 16 states in 2015.

In addition, 120 people, most of them aged 21 or below, in 34 states were confirmed to have the rare polio-like syndrome from August to December 2014.
